Child Trauma Therapy

You never imagined that something like this could happen to your child.

Since your child came into your life, all you have wanted to do was protect them from harm and the worst possible thing that has happened to them did.

If you could, you would take the pain away or go through it yourself.

Or maybe something like this happened to you and wondered how you could have missed all the signs. You think, “I should have known.”

There are times where it seems like your child is ok. You wonder if the worst is over and things can go back to being the way they were.

Other times you know things are not ok and you wonder if things will ever be the same again.

All you want is for your child to be happy. You get hopeful glimpses of her old self, but then that hope is gone just as quickly as it appeared.

You’re child may be struggling in school; she can’t seem to focus and her grades are not reflictive of her true capabilities.

She may seem sad or display mood irritability. She may get upset or argue with what may seem like the smallest things.

Her relationship with friends and family may be suffering as well. You may feel as if you are walking on eggshells to keep things peaceful in the home.

She may have issues with sleeping, eating, or maintaining hygiene skills. Your child may complain of somatic symtpoms, like headaches or stomach aches.

You simply want her to be happy and enjoy her childhood. You want her to grow up and have a normal and successful life without the trauma impacting her. You want her to heal.

HEALING CAN HAPPEN.

While I cannot erase the memories of what happened, I can help her learn how to heal from her trauma.

I can also help you learn how to support her and help her move through the pain.

In our work together, we will focus on understanding what trauma is and why she thinks, feels, and acts the way she does. I will help her calm her fears and reduce her flashbacks through mindfulness techniques. I will help her build safety and resiliency skills for the future.

In our work togther we will focus on…

  • Working through the story of the trauma
  • Understanding how her brain responds to trauma and why she thinks, feels, and acts as she does
  • Learning mindfulness to deal with fears and flashbacks
  • Developing strategies to manage overwhelming, confusing, and frightening emotions
  • Building resiliency and safety skills and for the future
  • Parenting strategies to help you deal with your child’s trauma and help her cope.

Your child can heal and live her life as a happy child-enjoying family, spending time with friends, doing better in school, and simply having fun. This will be just one piece of her story and as time passes, this story becomes a smaller part of who she is.

What is Play Therapy?

While adults are able to process their traumatic experiences, often through talk therapy, children don’t yet have the language to fully express themselves.  That is why I utilize play therapy in my work with children.

Play is a child’s natural way of communicating.  If you observe a child playing, you will notice just how they see themselves and see the world.

As a Play Therapist, I use play to help a child to gain an understanding of their experiences that is appropriate for their developmental level. I also assist the child to increase resilience, develop coping strategies, and decrease behaviors.
